When I found the old Voltage Regulator wasn't responding well to its recent adjustment
(see associated article), I went in search of another.
For the curious, the Bosch regulator was doing something more like clicking on and off
than vibrating rapidly, as normal, to provide a smooth charge. The lights would sometimes
go brighter for a second and so on.
A replacement "VR" turned out to be about $45 and I'm not only cheap but poor.
I went in search of an alternative at the local NAPA store.
What I was after was another vibrating points regulator as I wanted to be able to adjust
the charging voltage to compensate for the dual battery isolator I use. Yes, I wrote in another
article that my installing a 2 gauge main cable from the alternator output to the battery more than made
up for the small voltage loss over my antiquated isolator (newer designs are less "lossy"), but I like
being able to "tune" the charging system.
