High-Temperature POR

09/2006: NEVER AGAIN!

When the cylinder heads were away being rebuilt, I decided I'd explore high temperature paint
options for the exhaust system. When I was being robbed by Jon's Motors, I provided a new
heat exchanger, muffler and tailpipe from Bus Depot. Jon provided a decent used exchanger
for the other side. There were some holes in the tin, but all in all it was in pretty good shape.

Having used high temperature aerosol paints on this and other projects before, I wanted to
find something that actually works. Obviously, I'm a fan of POR products so I bought a pint
of their 1400° (F) paint. The instructions said the parts MUST be sand blasted before painting.

I asked the POR folks about that and they tell me that's true. I asked them about spray paints
like "VHT" that others have used with some success. POR guy tells me there's no such thing
as an aerosol hight temperature paint that lasts due to the solvents that are needed to produce it.

Having used POR products before with good results, I believe them.

I set out to find somebody to sand blast my now rusty, almost new, exhaust.
It turned out to be a challenge. I had no idea that almost nobody sand blasts anymore.
Eventually, I found Bill. Look in the "positive experiences" or click his name for more.
